A Hygienic Centrifugal Pump is a type of centrifugal pump which maintains the purity of the product without risk of contamination. This type of pump is easy to clean, has a smooth internal finish to discourage bacterial growth & does not contribute any impurities into the process.
Hygienic Centrifugal Pumps are visually quite different from an industrial centrifugal pump in terms of material, stainless steel is a minimum. The surface finish would range from 0.8μm or better depending on the process requirements. Some hygienic centrifugal pumps are produced by a mirror finish. They are usually capable of being CIP (Clean-in-Place) or SIP (Sterilisation-in-Place), notably referred to as a CIP Pump or SIP Pump.
There are various connection types available depending on the user preference and/or application. These are welded onto the pump casings and have to be suitably cleaned up after the welding i.e grind, smooth, passivating and polish. By passivating the material (stainless steel), you are increasing the layer of protection against rust.
Maximum flow of a Hygienic Centrifugal Pump is from 1 – 220m3/h.
What is a Food Grade Centrifugal Pump?
Normally, a Hygienic or Sanitary Centrifugal Pump is a food grade pump however, not all food stuffs require food grade Centrifugal pumps, e.g. chocolate can be moved with a standard positive displacement pump manufactured from cast iron.
What are the design standards and materials used for Hygienic Centrifugal Pumps?
There are no dimensional or performance standards for Hygienic Centrifugal Pumps, however, the following standards will usually apply to ensure purity of the process i.e 3A EHEDG, USP Class VI and cGMP.
In terms of materials used, stainless steel is a minimum but if more aggressive media is to be handled some manufacturers do offer higher materials of construction i.e hastelloy, alloy 20 and possibly others but as they are made to order, these pumps would command a higher price and longer lead time than stainless steel.
What are the main applications for a Hygienic Centrifugal Pump?
Dairy industry for pumping milk, by-products of milk, cream and soups.
Bio-Pharmaceutical industry for cultures and WFI (Water for Injection).
